Theo Couwenberg
I am an old fashioned, self taught painter, painting whatever intrests me.

I try to work in the tradition of the Dutch masters. By copying their work, I learned to paint the essentials in precise detail, “to make the invisible visible,” as an old master said.

I employ photos and modern printing techniques to compose my paintings. For wildlife paintings I try to make the background as authentic as possible.

The paint I use is mostly Mussini resin oil and Windsor Newton.

I have never contemplated painting as a professional having to provide for a young family in my younger days

From early childhood I had the urge to draw and create images. Later in life I started working with paints and prepared myself for retirement with painting as a hobby.

I owe so much to my wife Wini, who never complained if I spent time and money for my hobby and passion to paint.

After a lifetime of painting I found out the true meaning of RW Emerson’s saying “The years teach much which the days never know.”

I am grateful to be able to retire and paint in this tropical part of Queensland. It makes me feel as if I am back in the country of my birth.
