1770 - Cook discovers east coast of Australia
1787 - The First Fleet sails from England
1788 - Captain Phillip raises Union Jack at Sydney Cove, 26th January
1801 - Matthew Flinders circumnavigates the continent
1803 - Settlement of Van Diemans Land (Tasmania)
1810 - Lachlan Macquarie becomes Governer (1810 -21)
1815 - Road built across Blue Mountains
1817 - Macquarie first uses the name "Australia" in official correspondence.
1824 - Colony of Brisbane founded as a convict town.
1829 - Perth founded as a free town (accepted convicts later becuase of lack of immigration)
1835 - Melbourne begins as a village
1836 - Adelaide founded as a free town
1838 - Massacre of Aborigines at Myal Creek, 7 Europeans tried and hanged
1840 - Transportation of convicts to New South Wales ends
1847 - Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts founded. First exhibition at Australain Library, Sydney
1850 - Foundation of the University of Sydney
1851 - Gold discovered in Victoria. Gold rush in NSW and Victoria. Victoria separates from NSW
1854 - Eureka Revolt in Ballarat
1859 - Queensland becomes and independent colony, foundation of the Sydney mechanics School of Arts (now National Art School)
1863 - Fine Arts Commission, Melbourne establish prize of $200 for purchase of a painting by an artist resident in Australia
1865 - Fine Arts Commission prize awarded to Chevalier for "The Buffalo Ranges"
1870 - National Gallery School founded
1880 - Sydney Bulletin founded
1887 - First National Gallery School Travelling Scholarship
1894 - Melbourne music conservatorium founded
1895 - "Banjo" Paterson writes words of "Waltzing Matilda"
1899 - Australian troops to Boer War
